The “Panama Papers” scandal has caused huge turmoil in the global financial and political community, since renowned personalities are included on the list of offshore companies. Some Greeks who appeared to have issues with Justice in the past, are also on the list of people who have transferred illegal money.
The most renowned name revealed is that of Stavros Papastavrou, former Greek PM Antonis Samaras’ close associate. According to the documents which have come to publicity, Mr. Papastavrou was a member of the Board of Directors in three offshore companies in total, with the names Green Shamrock Foundation, Diman and Aisios, starting from 2005 to 2014. He even became the President of Aisios Foundation, during 2006.
However, the list contains the names of other Greeks as well. More specifically, as the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists reveals, Konstantinos Lanaras and Spiros Metaxas, (also included on the Lagarde list) are also involved in two offshore companies along with Mr. Papastavrou.
Mr. Papastavrou states that he does not even remember these companies. He also mentions that he had no obligation towards the tax authorities, since he did not own the companies, but merely served duties as a member, without any financial rewards.
