Chios Mayor Threatens to Sue Greek Government Over Mismanagement of Refugee Center

voy-708Chios Mayor Manolis Vournous is threatening Deputy Migration Minister Yannis Mouzalas with a lawsuit unless he makes sure that the VIAL refugee registration center does not turn into a detention center.
Vournous calls on the Greek government to assume responsibility for the proper operation of the VIAL refugee registration center on Chios that has turned into a detention center. He claims that the state has neglected its obligations regarding the concession of the municipal property. The mayor gives the Greek government one week to fulfill its obligations otherwise he will file a lawsuit.
This comes one day after police used violence to disperse a crowd of Tampakika village residents who were protesting against the misuse of the VIAL registration center. Three people were injured after clashing with police.
Vournous calls on the government for the proper use of the facility so that there are no violent incidents again, referring to the violent fights between Syrians and Afghans on Thursday night. He also asks the government to not allow a disproportionate number of migrants to be on the island and ensure good living conditions for them.
The Chios mayor finally asks that all damages in the area are restored.
On Monday, 66 migrants were transferred from Chios to Turkey as per the readmission deal between Ankara and the European Union.
