Mayor Kaminis Says Athens Will Soon Provide a Second Refugee Camp

Athens Mayor Giorgos Kaminis said he is ready to provide a second accommodation center for refugees under the condition that there is an end to the awful state of affairs around Victoria Square, a public park in a grubby neighborhood in Athens which has been flooded primarily by Afghan refugees.
Mr. Kaminis made the comments during an interview on SKAI and pointed out that the situation is unbearable for the people living in the neighborhood as well as for the refugees themselves.
He also said that he has a close collaboration with the Greek Deputy Minister of Citizen Protection Nikos Toskas regarding matters of security and that he has urged people living in the Victoria Park neighborhood to appeal for help only to volunteer organizations or to municipality authorities.
Furthermore, the mayor of Athens said that the Eleonas camp shelters around 700 people while work is currently under way for its expansion with the aim of accommodating an additional 500 people.
Regarding the controversial call by the Minister of the Interior and Administrative Reconstruction Panagiotis Kouroumblis to make children’s camps available to refugees and migrants stranded in Greece, Athens’ mayor categorically rejected such prospect, saying that this is inconceivable when the armed forces have camps throughout the country.
