Olympiacos F.C. are one small step away from qualifying to the last 16 rounds of the UEFA Champion’s league after a 2-1 victory over Dinamo Zagreb on Wednesday evening at the Karaiskakis Stadium in Piraeus.
The game did not start off well for Olympiacos, as Dinamo’s Hodzic scored in the 21st minute with a header. The Greeks had a major chance to bring the game back to level terms in the 54th minute when the referee awarded them a penalty, but Fortounis missed the opportunity and the subsequent rebound off the goalkeeper’s save.
A few minutes later however, winger Felipe Pardo equalized, landing a shot from inside the box. Dinamo were left with 10 men in the 79th minute when Josip Pivaric got a second yellow card for tripping Pardo.
It looked like Olympiacos would not be able to capitalize on their one man advantage, but Pardo came to the rescue in the 90th minute, shooting the ball to the Dinamo goal’s bottom right corner.
Olympiacos are now second in Group D with nine points. Bayern Munich are leading the group with nine points and a better goal difference. Arsenal and Dinamo Zagreb have three points each. Wednesday’s results mean that Olympiacos will finish at least third in the group, and thus have secured a spot in the UEFA Europa League in the worst case scenario.
The Piraeus team just needs one point, from their remaining two games, to qualify to the last 16. Even if they cannot manage to get this draw, two losses under certain conditions could send them through.
Group D standings:

  1. Bayern Munich: 9 points, +4 Goal Difference
  2. Olympiacos: 9 points, 0 Goal Difference
  3. Arsenal: 3 points, – 4 Goal Difference
  4. Dinamo Zagreb: 3 points, -6 Goal Difference
