Almost 30,000 Migrants and Refugees Have Left Lesvos In Less Than Five Days

migrants-el-venizelosThe constant influx of migrants and refugees to the East Aegean Greek island of Lesvos has been well documented throughout the past four months. The island saw a massive exodus of some of these migrants and refugees during this past week, as 29,260 have departed for mainland Greece since Monday, according to the Athens-Macedonian News Agency.
This number equals almost one third of Lesvos’s local population. From now on, and moving forward the island’s refugee and migrant settlement, Kara-Tepe, will be used to host Syrian refugees only, while migrants and refugees of other ethnicity will be staying at the Moria First Reception Centre.
Greek Caretaker Prime Minister Vassiliki Thanou will visit the island on Sunday.
Interior Ministry Refutes Minster’s Alleged Jihadist Statements
The Greek Interior Ministry denied on Friday that Greek Migration Policy Minister Giannis Mouzalas had ever said that the refugee influx could lead to the arrival of Jihadists in Europe.
‘The agencies of Greece, the EU, and other nations do not believe that there is a risk of jihadist influx through the refugee influx’ the ministry quotes Mouzalas as saying and adds “The minister asks that the refugee issue not be used for the creation of false impressions or for political party manipulation. The existing problem is important to begin with, we do not need to create more false ones.”
