A Clinton Foundation conference and reception that was to take place in Athens, Greece has been cancelled due to alleged fears of political cost to Hillary Clinton‘s presidential candidacy.

According to a Politico feature, the lavish Clinton Global Ιnitiative event that was scheduled in Athens in late June has been cancelled due to concerns that Hillary Clinton’s campaign could be damaged if she was seen collaborating with a Greek government that is increasingly close to Russia and antagonistic president Vladimir Putin.

The foundation had already booked a hotel and secured more than 1 million dollars from Gianna Angelopoulos, former President of the Athens 2004 Olympics Organizing Committee, who is a major foundation donor and friendly with the former U.S. president.

Bill Clinton did not want to cancel the meeting, according to the report. At the same time, Clinton financial officials rejected the idea that concerns about the Greek government played any role in the cancellation of CGI Athens.
