Academy of Athens Awards Writers, Historians, Musicians, Scientists

acadThe Academy of Athens awarded writers, poets, musicians, historians and painters for their outstanding work for 2014 and lifetime achievements in a ceremony on Friday.
The literature award was given to Marti Lambrou for her book “With the Handbrake Off.” Best novel was the short story collection “Untitled” by Katerina Daskalaki. Sofia Denisi and Michail Paschalis received the best essay awards.
“Stendhal Syndrome” gave Yiannis Doukas the best new poet award. Historian Christos Dionysopoulos was awarded for his book “The Battle of Marathon.” Pianist Yiannis Yiannopoulos and contralto singer Kiki Morfoniou-Komisopoulou received music awards.
Lifetime achievement awards were given to painter Stefanos Daskalakis, writers Dimitris Kalokyris and Giorgos Chouliaras, and poets Maria Laina and Giorgos Veis.

The Academy of Athens is supervised by the Ministry of Education and Religion. It is composed of three sections: the Sciences, Humanities and Fine Arts, and Ethical and Political Sciences.

The Academy’s main purpose is the cultivation and advancement of the Sciences, Humanities and Fine Arts, the conduct of scientific research and study, and offering learned advice to the state in these areas.

In the pursuit of these objectives, the Academy of Athens supports scientific research, participates in international scientific organizations, carries out publications, grants scholarships, and confers awards and honorary distinctions.

Currently there are 13 Research Centers and 10 Research Offices in operation, all with specialized libraries, as well as a central Library named the “Ioannis Sykoutris Library.” Since 2002, the Academy has supervised the Foundation of Medical and Biological Research.
