Cosmote will be the first communications company in Europe to sell smartphones based on the Mozilla Firefox platform, according to The Register.
Cosmote has started selling the 3.5-inch Alcatel One Touch C, and the 4.5-inch Alcatel One Touch Fire E in Greece. The first sells for 89 euros and the 4.5-inch model sells for 109 euros. Prices are in line with prices of the SIM-free phones on Ebay. it is an economic, basic model with the more expensive E sporting a five megapixel camera, a 960 x 540 pixel display, and is 3G.
So far, Mozilla has not succeeded in selling its mobile phones in Europe. Instead, its main markets are in Asia and South America. Spain’s Telefonica aim to see South American networks move to Firefox before they go to Android or iOS. The phones had been available in the German market in the past.
Cosmote is the biggest mobile network in Greece and is 40 percent owned by Deutsche Telekom. So far, there are no indications that the Mozilla Firefox smartphones will penetrate the European market through Cosmote.
