German FinMin: No Bilateral Agreement on Further Support to Greece

Greece and Germany have not concluded to any new bilateral agreement on further support to Greece after the recent meeting of the Greek Finance Minister, Gikas Hardouvelis, with his German counterpart Wolfgang Schaeuble on Wednesday, clarified the Ministry of Finance of Germany.

With this official statement the German side refused reports which followed the meeting of the two Finance Ministers — on the sidelines of the OECD World Forum in Berlin — by Greek media, and made clear that the discussion of the two was “not binding,” as Bloomberg pressed. “We reject reports by the Greek media, that Germany and Greece reached an agreement yesterday to further support Greece after the bailout program,” stated spokesman of the German Finance Ministry, Frank Paul Weber, to Bloomberg via email, adding that “the meeting ended without concrete results.”

After the meeting concluded, the Greek Minister appeared optimistic that Berlin intends to help Athens, as it desires a strong Greece and a strong Euro. This support, though, is on the grounds of finding a commonly accepted solution over Greece’s progress after exiting its bailout program and it is not of financial nature. “Mr. Schaeuble in particular, is a Europeanist. He wants a strong euro, a strong eurozone. It was emphasized in our meeting that to have a strong eurozone, we must have a strong Greece,” Mr Hardouvelis said.

Furthermore, sources from the Greek Ministry of Finance declared after the meeting on Wednesday, that “there was no talk of a third bailout program. There will be a new relationship after January 1, but its final form has not yet been decided. We will find a mutually acceptable solution,” he stated, refusing the reports on further German financial aid.
