A total of 562 public employees have been fired in 2014 for gross misconduct, the Ministry of Administrative Reform announced Tuesday.
In 2012 and 2013, a total of 351 public employees were laid off for similar reasons. Some of the employees were fired after facing charges ranging from misdemeanorsĀ to criminal acts and have had final court rulings issued against them. Others were fired for repeated absenteeism or for being hired using fake documents such as forged diplomas and certificates.
The Ministry issued a sample of this year’s cases, which include public employees stealing six-figure amounts by transferring them to personal accounts, officials bribed to issue licenses, municipal employees embezzling hundreds of thousands of euros, staff issuing fake receipts to receive compensation and many more.
The Ministry cited the case of an employeeĀ who was absent for 558 days between 2012 and 2013 and was found to have moved abroad, and another Ministry employee who was absent for 101 days in 2006, 252 days in 2007 and another 565 days between 2008 and 2011. This means that the particular employee was unjustifiably absent from his position for 994 working days.
Optimistic Prospects for job openings
Meanwhile, in the private sector, employers intend to start hiring in the year’s last quarter, in eight out of the nine main sectors of the country’s economic activity, according to the results of a quarterly survey conducted by ManpowerGroup.
The report records an increase in employer confidence in Greece for the ninth consecutive quarter, with the employment prospects index coming to +8% for the October-December 2014 period, compared to the same period in 2013. This has been one of the most optimistic estimates since the last quarter of 2008.
The most optimistic prospects come from Financial Services, Insurances, Properties and Corporate Services sectors, with a forecast of +13% in employment, compared to the last quarter of 2013. Transport and Communications (+10%) and Agriculture (+9%) follow.
