Greek Teenagers Starting Sex Life at 16

teenagers sexAccording to a survey by the Adolescent Health Unit of Agia Sofia Children Hospital, Greek teenagers start their sex life in the age of 16.
Out of 529 adolescents in Attica, 20% started their sex life before the age of 16. More specifically 44.3% of them started at the age of 14 years, 33% at the age of 15, while only 2,3% started having sex in 16. The survey showed that 5.7% are sexually active at the age of 12 while 10.2% started their sex life at 13.
According to child psychiatrist Tzeni Soumaki, summer is a season that promotes intimacy between teens. The sun, the sea, less pressure and prohibitions, help us relax, let alone adolescents and young people, says Soumaki.
She explains that the body passes through a series of biological and psychological changes in adolescence. These changes, in combination with swimming, dancing and flirting during summer, lead to the awakening of adolescent sexuality.
The findings of the survey have caused the concern of parents. Experts advise that a calm discussion between parents and children is necessary and that parents must answer every question.
Experts suggest that parents:

  • Must not be afraid of their children’s sexuality
  • Must remember their own teenage years
  • Must keep in mind that sex is another phase leading to the completion of their child’s identity
  • Finally, they must trust their children and the principals they have been raised him
