‘Promakhos’ Supports Return of Parthenon Marbles

pathenon marblesThe film “Promakhos,” the story of two Greek lawyers who fight for the return of the Parthenon Marbles to Greece, was screened last week in London, in the presence of British actor and big supporter of the marbles’ return, Stephen Fry.

The film was written and directed by American brothers John and Coerte Voorhees, who researched the controversial issue for six years.

Andreas (Pantelis Kodogiannis) is a Greek American lawyer who leads a litigation for the return of the Parthenon Marbles to Greece. During a meeting with the director of the Acropolis Museum (Giancarlo Giannini), Andreas presents a newly discovered Ottoman document that proves that the name of the official carrier of Lord Elgin’s 1801 expedition to Athens was changed to allow for the Marbles to be sold to the British government. The museum director decides to send Andreas to London to begin the deposition against the British Museum.

Andreas is accompanied by Eleni (Kassandra Voyagis) his childhood friend and co-counselor who is also a stong supporter of the return of the Greek marbles. The attraction between them is instant and a love affair soon begins.

The film took its name by the statue of Athena Promakhos that used to stand inside the Parthenon. The film stars Michael Byrne, Georges Corraface, Spyros Fokas, Giancarlo Giannini, Paul Freeman, Pantelis Kodogiannis, Kassandra Voyagis and Yiorgo Voyagis.
