Greece Unemployment Dips to 26.8 Percent in March

unemployment_GreeceNew March data released by the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) point to a slight drop in unemployment rates across Greece, which remains at 26.8 percent, down from 26.9 percent in February, and 27.2 percent a year ago.
According to the new seasonal revised data, a total of 3,482,345 people were estimated to be employed as of March 2014, while 1,274,843 were unemployed and 3,393,042 were not seeking a job.
ELSTAT’s recent report indicates that the number of jobless fell by 29,420 since March 2013 (2.3 percent drop), and by 1,466 people since February 2014 (0.1 percent drop).
Greece’s unemployment rates continue to have a downward trend for a second consecutive month compared to the same month of the previous year, and reveal that 7,022 less Greeks (0.2 percent drop) have given up their search for a job since March 2013, and by 14,859 people since February 2014 (0.4 percent drop).
The jobless rate for males dropped to 23.8 percent from 24.4 percent in March 2013 (0.6 percent drop), and in women to 30.6 percent from 30.8 percent in March 2013 (0.2 percent drop).
The unemployment rate however, is skewed by younger Greeks. According to the data, the unemployment rate among young Greeks aged between 15 and 24 years, was at 58.3 percent in March 2014, down 1.4 percent in March 2013 (59.7 percent), and almost twice as much as four years ago (March 2010 – 30.8 percent).
According to ELSTAT, the highest unemployment is recorded in the regional unit of Epirus-Central Macedonia (29.0 percent), and the lowest in the unit of Aegean (20.6 percent).
