Few things are known about the ties that France’s National Front party leader Marine Le Pen shares with Greece, considering the fact that her stepmother Jany Le Pen is of Greek origin.

Born as Jeannine Marie Louise Paschos in 1932 in Nice, Jany Le Pen is the daughter of a Greek art’s dealer who had migrated to France and married a woman of French-Dutch origin. Her first marriage to a Belgian businessman ended in 1984.

Paschos first meet her current husband — former leader of France’s far-right National Front party in 1985 and father to current leader Marine Le Pen — revealing in an interview: “It was spring 1985. A friend called, and asked me: As you are so familiar with hosting dinners, why don’t you call over a friend of mine? He is divorced and although living with his three daughters, he feels lonely.”

A year following the dinner, Le Pen called again: “I picked up the phone, heard his voice and felt my cheeks blushing. What a joy! He called me! I’m so happy!,” the Greek-French Paschos recalls.

The couple was married in May 1991. In a television interview in 1995, Paschos mentioned that her husband “is a true male, loves women, and loves the French,” and added, “People look strangely at him but I see him as a normal person. If I was to become France’s First Lady, I wouldn’t sit idle but travel all over the world.”

Jany Le Pen is presiding over several charity organizations like SOS Children of Iraq (SOS Enfants d’ Irak) and has traveled to several countries for humanitarian causes.
