The first nest of the Caretta-Caretta sea turtle of this season was located early on Monday in west Secania, Zakynthos, Greece, by volunteers of the Organisation Archelon, with the first hatchlings expected in 50-60 days.
Two previous attempts had been made by turtles the previous days to come ashore to nest up on the east side of the beach, but to no avail.
Last year, 3,456 nests which hatched 214,539 baby turtles were found. Archelon volunteers were able to protect 2,532 nests which led 148,843 hatchlings safe to the sea.
