Possible Greece-China Collaboration on ‘Silk Road’

piraeus portChinese President Xi Jinping, during a visit in Indonesia, proposed the building of a new “Maritime Silk Road” that would enhance a partnership with other European and Asian countries.

The Greek ambassador to China, Vassilios Costis, believes that Greece can help China realize its plans. He said that Greece is an ideal place to enter the emerging markets of southeastern Europe and the eastern Mediterranean thanks to its geographical location and developed infrastructure.

Emmanuel Stantzos, Greece’s minister for economic and commercial affairs, claimed that Greece, located at the crossroads of three continents (Asia, Europe and Africa), can play a crucial role in the “Maritime Silk Road”. He stated that the port of Piraeus is just 210 nautical miles from the main Mediterranean route and is the biggest port in the region. “Greece can be a gateway to Mediterranean and European markets for Chinese products,” Stantzos said.

Strantzos also noted that a possible collaboration of the two countries would be crowned with success as China is the world’s major exporter and importer of goods while Greek shipping industry is at the helm of the global market.
