Startup Weekend Takes Athens by Storm

Startup Weekend in Athens
The Athens Startup Weekend is taking place for the 7th time in Greece at The Cube Athens, a state of the art startup cluster and innovation space.
The Startup Weekend Athens, which runs March 7-9 and is part of the global nonprofit organization aiming to bring together people of different backgrounds and of different skills, will inspire entrepreneurs in Athens to work together and transform an idea into a business within 54 hours. The event opened on Friday March 7th and runs till Sunday March 9th when the presentation of the projects formed during the weekend will take place at 5pm.
Individuals with innovative ideas on education have gathered at The Cube Athens to create products as well as services that will revolutionize the usual market system, hence highlighting concepts like self directed knowledge, creativity, entrepreneurship, collaboration and innovation.
The list of mentors includes some of the brightest minds of Greece’s tech and other industries such as: head of studies in Athens Information Technology and co-founder of Novoville Iraklis Bourantas, executive education coordinator at Athens Information Technology Antonis Papadopoulos, co-founder and managing partner at Terragraphica S.A. Constantine Katevas, co-founders Dimitrios Spanos and Spiros Doxiadis,  co-founder of CoLab workspace Spiros Kapetanakis and venture capitalist Panos Lioulias.
The organizers of the event are co-founders of The Cube Athens Stavros Messinis and Maria Calafatis, Marketing manager Ilektra Apostolopoulou and Campus bus trainer Ioannis Chatsilidis. Executives from successful businesses all over Greece, like Google and Microsoft Hellas are expected to attend the event.
More than 1000 Startup Weekends have taken place in more than 170 countries, leading to the creation of startup businesses which enjoy great success today.
But how does Startup Athens Weekend work?
All Startup Weekend events follow the same basic model: anyone is welcome to pitch their startup idea and receive feedback from their peers. Teams organically form around the top ideas (as determined by popular vote). Teams with members from different background form.
On Saturday the frenzy of business model creation, coding, designing, and market validation starts. Teams work all day on their projects and mentors drop by to give them valuable feedback.
On Sunday teams wrap up their efforts and by 5 o’ clock they give their final pitches of their weekend projects. Judges question and choose the best… and then it’s a party!
