Cypriot Physicist Wins Humbolt Research Award

costas-kounnasCostas Kounnas, a Cypriot physicist won the Humbolt Research Award and is planning on collaborating on a new research project with string theorist and Professor at Ludwig Maximillians University in Munich, Dieter Lüst.
According to the press release: “Professor Costas Kounnas is one of the leading theoretical physicists in Europe, having made outstanding contributions to a wide range of fields, including theoretical particle physics, quantum field theory, supergravitation and superstring theory and cosmology.”
In particular, Kounnas has played a major role in developing theories of supergravitation and its relationship to string theory. At the moment, he is researching a theory concerning superstrings, and some aspects of string cosmology.
Costas Kounnas, was born in Famagusta, Cyprus. He studied Physics and Mathematics and in 1981 he obtained a doctorate degree from the Ecole Normale Superieure in Paris, France. He went on to work in CERN, Geneva and then at the University of California at Berkeley. He returned to France to work as a Research Director at CNRS at the Exole Normale Superieure, where he is still working.
The Humbilt Foundation promotes the cooperation between German researchers and their accomplished counterparts from all over the world. Winners of the research award are able to choose a German scientist with whom they want to collaborate.
