Greek Australian Lydia Ierodiaconou Wins Bronze Medal in Sochi

lydia_lassila_460x300The 32-year-old Greek-Australian freestyle aerial skier, Lydia Ierodiaconou, won the bronze medal in the Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia. Alla Tsuper from Belarus won the golden medal and the Chinese Xu Mengtao, the silver.

“I’m proud of my achievement,” said Lydia who after winning the golden medal in Vancouver in 2010, took time off the sport to start a family and concentrate on business pursuits. She is one of the most significant Australian athletes.  She was Australia’s flagbearer at the Closing Ceremony in 2010.

Apart from Ierodiaconou, another Greek Australian athlete stole the show in Sochi. The 22-year-old Stephanie Magiros from Sydney although she didn’t win a medal, impressed the judges. Magiros was the only Australian athlete who reached the semifinals in women’s snowboard halfpipe. The Australian press praised Magiros saying that she is a born champion and that she will have a great future. Stephanie Magiros is considered the most popular among Australian athletes in Russia.

Magiros’ family traveled to Sochi in order to support Stephanie. Even her great-grandmother traveled from the island of Kythira, Greece to Sochi. It was the first time that her great-grandmother saw Stephanie competing. “It was a dream come true” said the Greek Australian athlete.
