Same Old for Greek Market, Even On Sundays

storesStores in various Greek cities opened once more on Sunday, January 19, as part of a new initiative for businesses in the private sector. Although it was the first weekend of the sales period, there didn’t seem to be any upturn for store owners.
As Mr. Vassilis Kokidis, head of the National Confederation of Hellenic Commerce (NCHC) stated, “Sunday revenue did not make an impression yet again. It was no different from any other week-day in Greece’s market. Since the start of the winter sales, it has been clear that people are waiting until the end of the month to receive either their salaries or their pensions. It is then, when they make some purchases.”
Mr. Kokidis added that there was not much difference in comparison to last year’s first week of sales. The turnover was similar.
The sales period will last until February 28. It is expected that this year’s sales turnover will be about 5 billion euros, half a billion less than last year.
