The timelessness of Greek poet Kavafis, inspired the Onassis Foundation to take an innovative and cultural initiative.
From Tuesday October 15 the well-known poet Kavafis is displayed everywhere in Athens, and in this way, reaches out to local residents through his poems, like their deep internal voice that they have ignored.
In addition, an educational institution abroad had expressed interest to acquire Kavafis poetic collection. However, the Onassis Foundation managed to rescue this collection, and has chosen certain poems of his work, integrating them in the capital of Athens. Kavafis words are expressed in transport, buses, metro, and in the daily routine demonstrating the creative and optimistic side of life.
The Executive Deputy Director and Communications Manager of Arts and Letters, Afroditi Panagiotakou, who is responsible for the Onassis Foundation, explained that the goal is to highlight the active nature of inspirational and eternal poems by Kavafis.
The selection of poems highlights verses that showcase Kavafis unique gift to converse with humans independently of time, an ability few poets have.
The group Betroot who designed this concept, created a form of artistic intervention, managing to break taboos and clichés of the traditional poet. They prove that poetry is not elite, and can be translated and resonate even better on asphalt, in the heart of the city.
