logo_ercA total of 284 scientists have been selected to receive EUR 660 million in the latest funding round from the European Research Council (ERC), the European Commission announced on September 26.
Among those selected, are three Greeks: George Kollias, director of the Institute for Immunology Biomedical Sciences Research Center “Alexander Fleming”, Professor Petros Koumoutsakos, who holds the Chair of Computational Science in the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering at ETH Zurich and Athanasios Mantalaris, professor in Biosystems Engineering at the Imperial College of London.

According to the Commission, the work of the scientists selected to receive the funding include exploring the limits of life on Mars, developing a virus that can target cancer cells, using photonics to restore vision in patients with cataract, attempting to find solutions to societal challenges such as aging populations in developing countries or inequality in capitalist societies, and so on.

In its sixth and last Advanced Grant competition under the EU’s Seventh Research Framework Program (FP7), the ERC will provide individual grants of up to €3.5 million.
