Bartholomew Conducts Ceremony on Marmara Island

Marmaras

On September 19 the Greek Orthodox Patriarch, Bartholomew I of Constantinople, conducted a religious ceremony at the historic church on Marmara Island. Marmara is the largest Turkish island in the Sea of Marmara and the second largest island after Gökçeada.

Around 150 people attended this special ceremony, while many of them traveled all the way from Greece and Istanbul. When the ceremony was over, Bartholomew visited the local Saraylar Mayor, Süleyman Aksoy.

After their meeting at Aksoy’s office, both Bartholomew and Aksoy went to the open air Marble Museum. Then they visited historic Greek houses and the Mother Mary water cistern on the island.

Bartholomew also saved some time to pray for the poor and the disabled people of the island.
