Turks Claim Kourabiedes as Their Own

After battling with Greece over the origin of baklava and koulouri, Turkey is nominating the Greek dessert delicacy kourabiedes as a Turkish product.
“Greeks claim kourabie is a Greek product,” using a different spelling, the Turkish newspaper Vatan wrote. A kourabiedes producer from Andrianoupoli, Arif Metits gave a statement to the media about kourabiedes produced in Kavala, arguing that it’s really of Turkish origin.
“Kourabie belongs to the Turkish cuisine. During the period of Ottoman Empire, Kavala was a Turkish territory. Everyone visiting Adrianople canl see that all residents there make Kavala Kourabie,” said Metits, daring Greek kourabiedes producers to compete with the Turkish ones in a flavor competition..
