Thessaloniki Launches Green Greek Cities Network

The Municipality of Thessaloniki is launching a new initiative aimed at promoting the sustainable development of urban environments by launching a Green Greek Cities Network.
The municipalities of Ioannina, Katerini, Kerkyra, Kalamata, Trikkaion, Komotinis and Thermi have already announced their participation in the new initiative, while other municipalities are welcome to join the project at any time.
“It is an open invitation to everyone and hopefully all municipalities across Greece will join the Green Greek Cities Network. It will be a network of action, proposals and participation in EU programmes” said the Deputy Mayor of Environment, Life Quality and Free Spaces of Thessaloniki, Konstantinos Zervas.
The establishing meeting of the Network will be held on Friday, March 2. On the same day, the new municipality hall will host a symposium entitled “Thessaloniki: European Green Capital 2014? Formation of a new urban environment and development benefits for the city and its people”.
This is the first time a Greek city is claiming the European title of Greek Capital. To date 19 candidates have selected, while the winner-city for 2014 will be announced in the coming summer.
