A sudden wintry change in the weather conditions since Wednesday, forced hundreds of drivers to remain trapped along the Egnatia Highway near Kozani and Grevena for several hours on Friday.
Emergency rescue teams rushed to aid the trapped people, while authorities opened up schools to shelter them for the night.
Heavy snowfall and strong winds have caused several problems in many parts of central and northern Greece.
According to DPA, kilometre-long queues were reported on the motorway along Lamia as drivers had to reduce their speed or stop to fit snow chains.
Power cuts were reported near Konitsa, Tsoumenka and Karditsa, while schools in Kastoria, Grevena, Florina and Kozani remained closed.
