Greek “Spartan” Runs Melbourne Marathon

Greek Manny Karageorgiou has received the Melbourne Marathon Spartan title after completing a minimum of 10 Marathon races. This Sunday “modern Spartans” will be meeting again on the 2011 Melbourne Marathon and the Greek athlete hopes for the best.

Manny Karageorgiou ran for the first time the Melbourne Marathon at the age of 22.

“It’s one of those crazy things you do when you’re young,” Mr. Karageorgiou told Neos Kosmos explaining the reason why he entered the first marathon, “I just thought it was a good idea at the time and gave it a go.”

Mr. Karageorgiou is now 55-years-old and one of the 10 Spartan Legends who have completed all 33 consecutive Melbourne Marathons since the first marathon race from Frankston to Melbourne in 1978.

“The marathon is not as easy as it was, but it’s still a great challenge. It’s no longer about how quick I can do it, but whether I can do it at all,” he said.

Mr. Karageorgiou said he has not been training well enough to compete with his fellow runners in this year’s marathon but nevertheless will join the race.

The Melbourne Marathon Spartans Club was established back in 1987 to recognize the commitment, dedication, and determination required by Marathon runners to complete 10 demanding marathon distances.
