Stolen Acropolis Fragment Returns to Greece

An archaeological fragment from the Acropolis returned to Greece. A Dutch tourist, who visited Athens in the 50’s, removed a corner part of a capital or a cornice and kept it as a souvenir from the Acropolis.  Sixty years later, the man asked the Dutch National Museum of Antiquities Leiden to help him return the fragment in Athens. The Greek Embassy in Hague took care of the return and the widest possible publicity of the action, so that it becomes an example for others. The fragment will be officially delivered to Greece in a special event which will take place at the Museum, in the presence of Greek Ambassador to the Netherlands, Mr. J. Ekonomides. Mrs. Maria Lagogianni will direct the architectural part on behalf of the Greek Ministry of Culture and Tourism. Mrs. Lagogianni is the Head of the Directorate of Museums, Exhibitions and Educational Programs of the Ministry.
