Archimandrite Ephraim of Philotheou, commonly known as Elder Ephraim, is a former abbot of Philotheou Monastery on Mount Athos and is a archimandrit. He is also a spiritual guide of several monasteries located on Mount Athos as well as the founder of various monasteries in the States. He currently lives at St. Anthony Greek Orthodox Monastery in Arizona.
During a recent visit to Greece, Elder Ephraim warned citizens to be prepared for the difficult times ahead.
Father Superior of Agio Oros recently met with Elder Ephraim and asked him about Greece’s current economic troubles. He was absolutely clear, stating: “Many difficult days are to come”. The monastery created the “crisis team” which is responsible for preparing the monastery for the upcoming difficulties.
Elder Ephraim had the following additional comments:
“All this could be a bad joke. But it isn’t. Unfortunately the forthcoming bad situations, starvation and miser are easily visible to all of us…I can’t understand people. They ask if the new measures influence them. Honestly, I can’t understand how weathered is the modern society and the people of this country. Nobody cares for their neighbor and their problems. Everyone cares only about the new measures and if they affect their rights.”
“I believe that God will give us the opportunity to come around. The Greek Orthodoxy presented many modern personalities who offered and fought in order to save people. Porfirios, Paisios and Iosif are elders that fought for other people.”
“Is there any morality? There is immorality in education and in every healthy part of our society. The old society we knew does not exist anymore. Nowadays, there is only individualism. Why? Because some eroded all the good characteristics of the Greek people that could help them. Individualism is the modern value, while love is a “gift”. Many generations are grown up by learning how to “grasp” without being punished. But God watches. In our days, he let us being ”slapped” hoping that we will come round, like the drunks.”
