Discovering a lake and waterfalls in the arid Cyclades may seem impossible but Gerolimni on Andros is an exception to the rule.
As one of the most beautiful spots on the Greek island, it is also one of the most impressive natural wonders in the Cyclades.
The island’s natural beauty, enriched by greenery and flowing waters, creates a landscape unlike any other in the Cyclades. This lake is a destination well worth discovering on your next visit to this noble island.
Gerolimni, on the northern side of Andros near the village of Vourkoti, is a hidden mountain lake surrounded by lush greenery, well concealed from the outside world. Between two great rock slabs, a waterfall cascades down in a striking display. Its waters flow from the Achla River, which runs across the island from Mount Petalo to Achla Beach.

Lush green landscape at Gerolimni on Andros
The lush greenery, flowing waters, and vibrant wildflowers create a landscape you are unlikely to ever encounter again. The lake, fed by the waterfall, never runs dry. However, it is quite cold and only those brave enough attempt to dive in. A rope hangs nearby for those who wish to swing before plunging into the lake.
However, Gerolimni on Andros hides several dangers. Access is difficult, the waters are very cold, and the path is quite rough. The large stones that need to be stepped over are quite slippery, so visitors should be cautious. Moreover, the area is quite isolated from the main parts of Andros, so you should bring everything you might need.

A visit and a trek to Gerolimni is an unforgettable experience. However, it is not suitable for people with mobility difficulties or for those who do not have the necessary equipment.
Finding the lake and waterfalls is not easy
Andros is home to the beautiful Gerolimni lake and waterfalls, but finding them isn’t easy. Access requires patience and careful attention. For safety and convenience, it’s best to visit with experienced guides from a local tour agency. Several agencies on Andros offer guided trips, ensuring safe access and providing detailed information about everything you’ll see.
On the other hand, if you decide to visit Gerolimni on the island of Andros on your own, you should leave your car at the Monastery of Agios Nikolaos. From there, follow Route 6 toward Vourkoti. When you arrive at the beautiful Achla Bridge, you can take a wonderful break and enjoy the view.
From the bridge, leave the main path and walk upstream parallel to the river. The lake and waterfalls are no more than 30 minutes from the bridge. Be very careful and wear closed shoes, as you will need to climb over rocks that can be quite slippery.
Gerolimni on Andros is one of the most beautiful spots on this noble island and promises an unforgettable experience. Accolades for Andros, located just ten kilometers (six miles) off the tip of Euboea, keep coming from major international media, which continue to praise its many charms.
The Sunday Times recently named Andros the top tourist destination for uncrowded vacations, while the Daily Telegraph recommended it to travelers seeking the most secluded spots in Greece.
