Greece was the country that held the title for having the shortest flight in the world up until a few years ago. The flight between the islands of Kasos and Karpathos in the Dodecanese is significantly less than five minutes. It also takes another extra fifteen minutes to board and exit the aircraft.

The two islands that the five-minute flight connects are only a mere 19.3 kilometers away from one another. Since they are connected by air transportation, traveling between them is a breeze for anyone who wants to navigate from one island to the other.

The airport of Kasos is located in close proximity to the sea, and the aircraft that fly to and from the airport are noticeably smaller in size than those to which we are generally accustomed.

List of three world’s shortest flights

Flight time is the primary criterion for inclusion on this list of the shortest flights in the world. Nonetheless, in cases in which these times were too close, nautical miles were also taken into consideration in order to best determine which routes would make it into the top three.

Because private or charter flights can be as short as the customer desires and there is no efficient way to track them, only commercial flights have been included in this list.

1. Westray and Papa Westray

The journey between the islands of Westray and Papa Westray, located in the archipelago of Orkney off the coast of Scotland, is the world’s shortest flight on a commercial airline. If the wind is right, the flight literally takes less than two minutes, so there’s no need for passengers to make themselves too comfortable!

The distance between the two islands, serviced by Loganair, is approximately 1.7 miles. People who want to commute between the two locations have no other alternative but to take a ferry ride that takes twenty minutes and often passes through pretty rough waters.

2. Karpathos and Kasos

Greece’s Dodecanese archipelago includes the islands of Karpathos and Kasos (sometimes also spelled Kathos). The flight time is barely five minutes, and the two islands are a mere twelve nautical miles apart.

If flying is not one’s preferred method of transportation, there is a ferry service that connects the two islands as well. Taking the ferry, however, takes an additional ninety minutes longer than simply flying.

3. Connemara and Inishmore

It’s no surprise that the majority of the world’s shortest flights are those that connect remote islands to the mainland.

One of these is the trip from Connemara, a district in western Ireland, to Inishmore, the largest of the Aran Islands off the coast of Ireland. The flight time to the Aran Islands is less than ten minutes, making it the most efficient option for getting there from the mainland.

The Aran Islands are a popular tourist destination due to their stunning natural scenery and unique Gaelic way of life. The biggest of the group, Inishmore (also: Inis Mór), is rich in both ancient and Celtic history.
