Greek Schools in MIT’s Marine Robotics Competition

IMG_1596-300x224Greek schools are participating in an international competition of MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) on marine robotics. Among them is the Experimental High School of Evangelical School of Smyrni. In collaboration with the Eugenides Foundation in Athens and with the help of educational technologists, a group of second and third grade students assert their distinction.
“This program, which is in collaboration with the Eugenides Foundation and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), is about constructing underwater robots and is based on the subject of technology, as well as informatics and physics,” Nikos Linardos, Headmaster of the Evangelical School of Smyrni, explained.
One of the educational technologists, Pantelis Diamantis pointed out that through the marine robotics program the students have the opportunity to gain valuable knowledge and experience. He referred to the problems that students face, such as the small laboratory and the lack of time, as the teenagers have various other responsibilities.
“I am very interested in technology and everything about robotics and physics. These are essential for the robot we are constructing,” one of the students said, adding that, “This is a very good opportunity for me to come closer to this subject.”
Orestis Petropoulos, an Evangelical School of Smyrni graduate, is among the students’ helpers in marine robotics: “With this robot, measurements for the marine environment will be conducted. The students, by themselves, have to say that we can extend this robot’s capabilities.” He concluded: “This is a very good chance for the students to see all that they learn being applied, so that they can see if their ideas will work in practice.”
The robot the students are constructing is an underwater ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicle) in the framework of the marine robotics program, Hydrobot, introduced in Greece by MIT Sea Grant Lab and the Eugenides Foundation.
