Greek PM Writes Letter to Greek Girl Worried About Canceled Birthday Party

In late October, a ten-year-old Greek girl wrote a letter to Greek Prime Minister Kyriakios Mitsotakis shortly before he imposed a nationwide lockdown, fearing that the coming measures would mean her birthday party in November would be canceled.
The Greek leader, who is a father himself, wrote her a personal letter  in response — something that the girl was certainly not expecting.

In her letter, the girl, from the city of Igoumenitsa in northwestern Greece, wrote that she was worried her November birthday party with all of her friends would have to be cancelled if the Prime Minister put the country into a coronavirus lockdown for the second time.
The young girl wrote to PM Mitsotakis, expressing her frustration at all of the holidays she missed this year because of Covid-19: “if you’re thinking about putting us back into lockdown, you should know that you owe me my birthday. You already owe me Carnival, Easter, the 15th of August, Clean Monday, May First, and all of the Panigyria from this summer!”
The young girl’s letter completely embodied the frustration felt by many around the world at the many moments of fun and enjoyment that make life worthwhile that have been lost this year due to the pandemic, which has killed nearly 1.3 million people worldwide.
Many have come to terms with the fact that the strict measures have been put in place to help protect those vulnerable to the virus, but it is difficult for many, especially children, who are missing out on their favorite holidays with their families.

Understanding the girl’s frustration, the Greek Prime Minister responded warmly, promising her that she would have an even better celebration in 2021, stating “I’m sure that you will have an even lovelier and bigger birthday party next year.”
He expressed his sadness that “the lockdown will ruin (her) plans for a birthday party” but he stressed that the measures were necessary in order to “protect those people that we love the most” from the coronavirus.
