Citigroup is being investigated by the Greek authorities after one of its staff warned the bank’s clients of the possibility of the country announcing a debt restructuring this weekend.
The police said Thursday it had asked for outside help after the finance ministry on Wednesday called for an investigation into “possible criminal conduct” related to this email.
Local reports said the email came from an employee of U.S. bank Citigroup.
“We are co-operating with the authorities and do not consider there to have been any wrongdoing by Citi or its employees,” Citigroup said in a statement from its regional office in London.

Australian Visitor Visa and other visas may become easier to obtain

Immigration Minister Chris Bowen and Nick Sherry Minister for Small Business have announced a discussion paper asking for views on the simplification of Australian visitor visas.
The Government is trying to reduce the different types of visas and visa subclasses by fifty percent by 2015. Mr Bowen went on to say:
“The government’s proposal to simplify visitor visas follows on from our recent commitment to streamline temporary work visas.”
“We are undertaking broad public consultation on the visa simplification process, to ensure we consider the impact of any changes on the community,” he added.
The proposals are that all short-stay (non-business visitor) work activities be moved out of the visitor program and into the new unsponsored short-stay visa. This will form part of the proposed new temporary work visa. It is also proposed that the types of visitor visas are reduced from nine to four.

Senator Sherry went onto say:
“This streamlining will be achieved by relocating certain short-stay work entitlements and by consolidating common regulatory requirements.
“The government is planning to achieve further simplification in this area by standardising similar regulations and removing duplicate regulation.”
If you wish to comment on these proposals you have until 13 May 2011 to do so. It is hoped that there will be simplified visit visa requirements in the future and that this will result in more people visiting Australia.

Goldman Sachs: Voluntary Restructuring Of Greek Debt Possible In 2012

0

Goldman Sachs said on Wednesday that there is a rising probability of a voluntary restructuring of Greek debt.
GS said in a report regarding European Banks that a spike in Greek CDS to above 1,300bp marks a new all time high, demonstrating the market’s perception of a rising probability of debt restructuring.
It estimates that a 20%-60% haircut of Greek sovereign paper corresponds to an aggregate European bank capital hit of €13-41b, which is small and represents only 1%-3% of total Tier 1 capital in the context of the sector aggregate.
But for Greek banks Goldman estimates the impact would be €8-25b or 26%-80% of total Greek bank capital and 50%-160% of current market cap. “Greek banks would realistically require substantial additional capital to cover for incremental losses from a theoretical restructuring”, it notes.
The first round capital destruction of Greek restructuring would be severe for the domestic banks, said GS.
According to official data and GS estimates, Greek and Cypriot banks hold 60% of Greek debt, while German and French banks hold 19% and 9% of the debt.

Greek Fraud “Phantom” Sentenced to Deportation to New Zealand

Michaels Loizos

An alleged conman, who is fond of referring to himself as the “Phantom”, 44-year-old expatriate Michaels Loizos, has lost an application to further delay his extradition to New Zealand.

An Australian court ruled that Michaels Loizos should be deported to New Zealand where he is accused with 140 counts of fraud, totaling 2.25 million U.S. dollars, at the expense of well-known personalities of the country.
The expatriate is accused of fraud in Melbourne, too. He supported that he should not be expelled because he “will not have a fair trial in New Zealand” but the court rejected his request. However, New Zealand authorities will have to wait a little longer to get their hands on Loizos Michaels as he now has 15 working days to appeal the decision.

Loizos Michaels disappeared from New Zealand last July. After several weeks of manhunt and arrest warrants that were issued by the police of New Zealand and Victoria, he was detected last January and arrested on the Gold Coast of Australia. When he was given a few days permission to visit his sick mother in Melbourne, he disappeared once again.
According to the police of Victoria, the 44-year-old continued frauds in Melbourne, winning substantial amounts at the expense of innocent citizens. He presented himself as a trader to the victims and by cheating them, he continued winning huge amounts of money.
