Access to high-speed internet at museums and archaeological sites in Greece will soon become a reality, thanks to a collaboration between the Greek Ministry of Culture and COSMOTE, the Greek telecommunications giant.
This move will push the country firmly into the digital age, allowing visitors and the sites themselves to take advantage of all of the benefits of free, high-speed internet access.
Greece is home to many extraordinarily significant cultural sites, including museums housing masterpieces of antiquity, as well as countless ancient monuments and temples.
These sites bring in millions of visitors every year, and the addition of free high-speed internet provided by Greece’s largest telecommunications company will only enrich visitors’ experiences at these iconic cultural and historic attractions.
With the addition of wireless internet access, 25 museums and archaeological sites in Greece can provide cutting-edge services such as unique audio and visual guides, as well as augmented reality, which is currently part of many museums’ displays, as part of an immersive experience for visitors.
These educational services can help to bring visitors back into the world of Greece’s past, pushing them to understand history on a deeper, more meaningful level.
Visitors to the sites can also utilize the free, high-speed internet to search for more information about the sites, as well as Greek history in general, and share their experiences in Greece with others on social media.
Internet at Museums “sends a message” to the world
Recognizing the importance of supporting Greece’s cultural and historic attractions, COSMOTE’s investment into the ambitious plan totals a whopping 3 million euros.
Michael Tsamaz, President and CEO of COSMOTE, highlighted the importance of supporting Greece’s culture and history in a statement on Wednesday, saying “We support our history and culture, because this knowledge serves as a compass for the future.”
“Only when we know our roots can we begin to know where we are headed,” Tsamaz added.
As Greek Minister of Culture Lina Mendoni noted, this collaboration between COSMOTE and Greece’s Ministry of Culture has been in the works for a few years: “The idea for this program started years ago, and now it is growing and expanding to bring internet to 25 sites of considerable historic and cultural interest,” Mendoni said Wednesday.
“Our cooperation with the Ministry of Culture allows us to utilize technology to display our cultural heritage and to increase the impact of our history,” Tsamaz noted, regarding the company’s collaboration with the Ministry.
Noting the move’s influence on Greece’s image internationally, Tsamaz highlighted the country’s immense cultural importance: “With the infrastructure for the next generation of free internet, we are sending a message from the most important monuments in all of the world, strengthening the image of a contemporary, digital Greece.”
