Life and career

Andrea Bocelli was born on September 22, 1958, in Lajatico, Tuscany, Italy. His parents, Edi and Alessandro Bocelli, were farmers who also worked as winemakers. His family had a history of visual impairment, and Bocelli was diagnosed with congenital glaucoma, a condition that affects the optic nerve, at an early age. Despite undergoing several surgeries to try and restore his vision, Bocelli lost his sight completely after a football accident when he was twelve years old.

Despite his blindness, Bocelli was determined to pursue his passion for music. He showed a natural aptitude for music, and his parents encouraged him to learn to play musical instruments. He started playing the piano at the age of six and later learned to play the flute, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, guitar, and drums. He also sang in the church choir and participated in local music competitions.

After completing his education, Bocelli studied law at the University of Pisa but soon realized that his true passion was music. He started performing in piano bars in the evenings and competed in local singing contests, where he honed his skills as a performer.

In 1992, Bocelli was discovered by Italian pop artist Zucchero, who invited him to perform a duet with him on the song “Miserere.” The song, which also featured Luciano Pavarotti, became a massive hit in Italy and helped to launch Bocelli’s career.

In 1994, Bocelli won the prestigious Sanremo Music Festival with his performance of “Il mare calmo della sera.” The song became an instant hit and helped to establish Bocelli as a major recording artist. Since then, he has recorded fifteen solo studio albums of both pop and classical music, three greatest hits albums, and nine complete operas, selling over seventy-five million records worldwide.

Bocelli’s album Romanza, released in 1997, is one of the best-selling albums of all time, with over 20 million copies sold worldwide. Sacred Arias, released in 1999, is the biggest selling classical album by any solo artist in history, with over 10 million copies sold worldwide.

Bocelli is also known for his philanthropic work, particularly through the Andrea Bocelli Foundation, which he founded in 2011. The foundation’s main focus is to empower people and communities in poverty, supporting projects and initiatives that promote education, health, and the arts.
