Princeton University has published a new study highlighting 20 occupations most at risk of becoming redundant thanks to advancements in Artificial Intelligence (AI). The study revealed that call center operators are the most at risk of losing their jobs, followed by teachers in various disciplines, including law, history, religion, and languages.
The authors of the study stated that AI would have a multifaceted impact on work. In some cases, AI will replace work that was previously done by humans, while in other cases, AI will complement work done by humans. Recent advancements in AI language modeling, such as ChatGPT, have garnered a lot of attention and controversy.
Details of the study
To determine the extent to which AI could automate different occupations, the researchers constructed an algorithm that linked 10 AI-powered applications, such as language modeling, image generation, and translation, to 52 human abilities, such as arm-hand steadiness and oral comprehension.
Interestingly, many of the jobs that are at risk are high-paying roles that require a significant level of education, including budget analysts, actuaries, accountants, and judges. However, when the study authors adjusted the algorithm to account for recent advancements in language modeling, the list of at-risk jobs changed significantly.
Workers at call centers were deemed to be the most vulnerable, which is not unexpected considering that many businesses are already using AI-powered chatbots to do the duties associated with this role.
The authors of the study hypothesize that human telemarketers might be able to make better use of language modeling if it were applied to augment their work. One example of this would be making use of customer responses in real-time to provide pertinent, customer-specific prompts to the telemarketer.
Occupations most & elast likely to be replaced
Of the 20 occupations listed in the study, 14 were higher education teachers in various disciplines, including geography, religion, history, English, and sociology. The study authors noted that occupations in the field of education are likely to be relatively more impacted by advancements in language modeling than other occupations.
This study comes shortly after researchers from Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne revealed which jobs they thought were the most and least likely to be taken over by robots.

- Judges and magistrates
- Geography teachers
- Library science teachers
- Clinical, Counseling, and School Psychologists
Additionally, meat packers, cleaners, and builders are at the highest risk of being replaced by machines, while physicists and lawyers are least likely to be replaced.
Key challenges for society
Professor Rafael Lalive, the co-author of the study said, “The key challenge for society today is how to become resilient against automation.” He further said, “Our work provides detailed career advice for workers who face high risks of automation, which allows them to take on more secure jobs while re-using many of the skills acquired on the old job.”
The researchers developed a tool that revealed the automation risk of different jobs and suggested ways to reuse abilities.
The authors of the study concluded that AI would continue to transform the workforce in the coming years, and it is crucial for policymakers and businesses to understand the impact of AI on different occupations.
