A young woman who was rescued in Turkey by the Greek rescue team (EMAK) has said thank you in Greek to the personnel who successfully managed to pull her from the rubble of a building toppled by the earthquake which struck Turkey and Syria on Monday.

The woman, who has been identified as 20-year-old Ayren, was found trapped by debris in the Turkish city of Hatay. “Thank you,” she reportedly said in broken Greek to the emergency responders who saved her life.

As civil authorities in Turkey and Syria take stock of the damage and loss of life caused by the earthquake, local first responders together with emergency rescue teams from Greece and other countries continue to search for survivors.

Young woman rescued in Turkey by Greek EMAK

Captain Ioannis Artopoios, the representative of the Greek Fire Department, to which the special EMAK teams belong, spoke to the media about the rescue efforts of the Greek emergency response teams in Turkey thus far.

The EMAK team reportedly found the young woman amidst the rubble of a collapsed apartment building, she was trapped and exhausted by her efforts to save her infant child.

The infant, unfortunately, died, together with another woman, identified as Ayren’s mother. However, the EMAK team busied themselves with rescuing Ayren, who had been crushed by furniture and could not move her leg which was resting on a concrete beam.

Whilst trying to free her from the debris, EMAK personnel made sure that she was hydrated and fed. Members of the team tried their best to reassure Irene, telling her that “don’t worry, we’ll get you out alive.”

According to reports, the Greek team “made an incision in the column that was blocking them.” They then removed the baby, who had already died, and created enough space for themselves to rescue Irene.

After the young woman was rescued by the Greek personnel, was immediately taken to a hospital in Turkey. Artopoios later commented that he heard her thanking the EMAK members in broken Greek.

Humanitarian aid

Greece is also preparing to send humanitarian aid to Syria. According to the Greek Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, aid can be sent once a request is activated from the country affected by the disaster.

However, now that a request to the European Civil Protection Mechanism has been made by Syria, Greece is now in a position where it can provide aid.

The relevant Greek authorities are now cooperating with European partners to send medicines, tents, and general supplies to help survivors in Syria left without homes and shelter.

At the same time, a second EMAK team was dispatched to Turkey to assist with rescue efforts. A C-130 cargo ship is flying between Greece and Turkey to transport personnel, aid, and equipment.
