An explosion that tore through a restaurant in Western Turkey killed seven people on Friday. An official said that the blast was probably caused by a gas leak.
The explosion occurred in Nazilli, the largest town in Aydın Province in Western Turkey. The governor of the province told the media that at least five other people were injured by the blast.

The blast occurred at around 3:35 p.m. local time on Friday. Images of the site of the explosion show a damaged multistory building. A restaurant selling kebabs was situated on the ground floor. The façade of the building was blackened by the blast, and all the doors and windows were blown off or shattered.
According to media reports, a fire burned at the site of the explosion at the Turkish doner kebab restaurant. Fire trucks and first responders could be seen arriving at the scene in footage of the blast.
Governor Huseyin Aksoy of the province of Aydin said that the explosion was most likely caused by a gas leak. Findings from the scene indicate that staff was busy changing an empty gas cylinder used in the kitchen when the blast occurred.
Seven people were killed and five were injured. One of the casualties is said to be hospitalized and in critical condition.

Is the incident being treated as suspicious?
According to a tweet by the Minister of Justice of the Republic of Turkey, Bekir Bozdag, “The person who allegedly caused the explosion was taken into custody.”
“May our Lord not let such painful events happen to our people and our country again,” he declared.
It is unclear whether the authorities are treating the explosion as a suspicious event. Governor Aksoy’s comments seem to indicate that the blast was merely caused by an accident in the restaurant’s kitchen.
Just last month, a terrorist attack occurred in Istanbul. A bomb was set off on a busy and popular street in the city. The explosion killed six people and wounded dozens of others. As a result, Turkey’s security services remain wary of any explosions or unusual activity.
Gas leaks, particularly those involving restaurant appliances, can sometimes cause dangerous explosions or fires. In 2014, a gas leak in a restaurant in Athens caused an explosion that destroyed the building and damaged surrounding vehicles. No one was killed in the particular incident.

Nazilli, where the explosion happened, is a town situated in Western Turkey. The town has a rich history connected to the Turkish, Ottoman, Armenian, and Greek peoples who have historically inhabited Anatolia.
Ancient coins were discovered in the nearby ruins of the ancient Greco-Roman city of Harpasa. A castle and an ancient Armenian village are also close to the modern town of Nazilli.
