Greek Speaking Chinese Students Go Viral

Chinese students attending Shanghai’s University of International Studies surprised TikTok users by speaking fluent Greek on a video that went viral on the platform.

The video was posted on the platform by Marianna Lee, a Chinese TikToker, who conducts street interviews in Greek.

Asteria, Fani, Odysseas, Ivi, Anthoula, Iasonas, and Zenonas are students of the Department of Modern Greek Studies. The TikTok video showcases their ability to speak the Greek language as if it were their mother tongue.

Their adequate pronunciation, rich vocabulary, admiration for Greek philosophers, and love for Greek mythology, culture, and architecture is exhibited throughout their short interviews.

The viral post has surpassed six hundred thousand views on TikTok’s platform with the comments section flooding with astonishment.

“Zenonas speaks like a Greek,” a user said.

Another wrote: “I am in shock with everyone but I am sure that Zenonas is a Greek in an Asian body.”

Other users added: “What they’re doing is so difficult! Congratulations! They speak better than Greeks!”

Sofia Hou, director of the department, also spoke on video, mentioning that the Department of Modern Greek Studies of the Shanghai University of International Studies was founded in 1972 and now numbers about twenty to thirty students.

It was the first department of Modern Greek Studies in China, and, for a long period of time, it was the only one.

The department is taught by three Chinese professors as well as one Greek, Rania Katavouta, who stated that she has been working there for the last nine years. In addition to Modern Greek, she also teaches students Modern Greek literature. Her goal is to familiarize students with Greek culture in general.

Viral video of Chinese singer performing in Greek

A Chinese singer named Elpida Wu released a video in early 2022 in which she performed a Greek song by pop artist Helena Paparizou in perfect Greek.

The song called “Mazi sou” (“Together” in Greek) appeared on YouTube and became a hit on social media instantly.

“The official video clip for the beautiful love song ‘Together’ by Helena Paparizou, has finally arrived,” Elpida Wu said on YouTube. “Despite the difficulties I encountered during my interpretation, I finally succeeded! I hope you like my song and performance!”

Through her videos, Elpida tries not only to convey her love for Greece to her compatriots, but also to highlight her own homeland for the Greek public.

In this way, she pointed out in an interview with iefimerida, she helps in strengthening the relations between Greece and China.

The countries may be very different, but, according to her, they also have several common themes, such as their long history, the kindness of the people, and the fact that they embrace different cultures.

In 2021, Elpida participated in a video in which professors and students in Chinese universities performed Dionysis Savvopoulos’ song “Let the dances keep” to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Greek Revolution.
