An award-winning author of children’s books in Greece has been charged with the possession of over a hundred videos depicting child pornography.

Police say that criminal charges were filed against 55-year-old Vassilis Papatheodorou after child pornography was found on two hard drives in his possession following an investigation prompted by information from foreign agencies.

Following his appearance before an investigating magistrate, where he claimed he downloaded the films for work purposes as he was preparing a book on a relevant topic, Papatheodorou was placed on detention in a Tripoli prison as of October 18th.

According to police sources, more than ninety recordings were discovered on the hard drives, some of which included kids as young as twelve.

According to a report on Mega TV, the pornographic material was downloaded over a period of five years.

Greek author regularly visited schools

After learning of the charges, Greek publisher Kastaniotis stated on Wednesday that it had ended its relationship with the author who headed the publisher’s children’s division.

Papatheodorou was awarded the Greek state prize for children’s literature twice, namely in 2008 and 2010. The Hellenic Author’s Society said it is withdrawing its nomination for him for the 2022 Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award in light of the allegations.

He has been the author of books for children and teenagers on topics “dealing with issues such as bullying and sexism in schools, interpersonal relationships, racism and repressed homosexuality,” as he notes on a page on the back of one of his books.

His website states that Papatheodorou frequently went to schools all around the nation to speak with kids about the issues they confront.
