The exact net worth of Athina Onassis, the only surviving descendant of Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis, is unknown, but most analysts estimate it is now much less than one billion dollars.

The life of the 37-year-old heiress has resembled that of a Greek tragedy. She lost her mother, Christina Onassis, who tragically died of pulmonary edema when she was just three years old. She married Brazilian show jumper/Olympic medalist Álvaro de Miranda Neto in 2005 only to see her marriage end in acrimony in 2016.

Since then, she has lived a very private life and is seldom seen in the spotlight. Her exact net worth today remains a mystery.

Estimates of Athina Onassis’s net worth by asset class:

  • Real estate: $200-300 million
  • Cash: $100-200 million
  • Stocks and bonds: $100-200 million
  • Horses and equestrian properties: $50-100 million
  • Other assets: $50-100 million

Onassis inherited 55 percent of the Greek magnate’s fortune

Athina’s mother, Christina, inherited fifty-five percent of the Onassis fortune. Aristotle Onassis had a net worth of $500 million at the time of his death in 1975. That is the equivalent of $2.3 billion after adjusting for inflation today.

The remaining forty-five percent of the estate (excluding Jackie Kennedy Onassis’s portion of twenty-six million dollars) was bequeathed to the Alexander S. Onassis Foundation, which was founded in honor of Aristotle’s son. Alexander Onassis died of injuries resulting from a plane crash in 1973.

Athina inherited her mother’s fortune. Onassis biographer Dimitris Lymberopoulos revealed in his book The Onassis Dynasty that Christina Onassis left behind “real estate worth half a billion dollars, $40 million in deposits in the United States, $90 million in deposits in Latin America, $200 million in investments in various shipping, construction, and metallurgical companies, and unknown sums of money deposited in Swiss banks.”

Athina took control of the inheritance on her eighteenth birthday, and, after she turned twenty-one, her lawyers attempted to have her instated as President of the Onassis Foundation to no avail.

The foundation’s President, Stelio Papadimitriou, at the time stated, “This is the most prominent foundation in Greece. We are not going to turn it over to someone who has no connection with our culture, our religion, our language, or our shared experiences, and who never went to college or worked a day in her life.”

“There’s nothing we would want more than to have a descendant of Onassis become president of the foundation, but Athina’s qualifications for the job are nil,” Papadimitriou said.

Lavish lifestyle and acrimony after divorce from Álvaro de Miranda

Despite the hardships in her life, Athina has become successful in her own right. The last surviving Onassis is a seasoned show jumper, and her devotion to expensive horses means that much of her fortune and energy has been devoted to the animals over the years.

Athina Onassis was only twenty years old when she married Álvaro, whom she had known for many years from show jumping competitions.

Together, they traveled the world, competing in the glittering world of show jumping for eleven years. Onassis also bought an $8.6 million, 10,600 square foot home in São Paulo.

The couple legally separated in 2016 after allegations arose that Miranda was involved with another woman for eight years of their eleven-year marriage.

Miranda reportedly asked for eleven million euros in the divorce (based on their prenuptial agreement) and “350,000 euros for alimony, payment for their joint ventures, as well as custody of their horses and properties with a total value of [four hundred million] dollars.”

The divorce was finalized in late 2017 with Álvaro, according to some reports, getting $10 million.

Onassis net worth and real estate

In 2014, Onassis paid twelve million dollars for a horse farm in Wellington, Florida, and she sold the 5.62-acre property for $12.75 million in 2017.

In 2013, Athina sold the Greek island of Skorpios to Russian billionaire Ekaterina Rybolovleva. Though the exact sale price is unknown, it is rumored to be around $150 million.

Aristotle bought Skorpios for 3.5 million drachmas (which is equivalent to around twelve thousand dollars today) in 1963, and he is buried on the island, as are Christina and Alexander.

Onassis and her former husband were joint owners of AD Sport Horses, a horse breeding and training business based in Fleurus, Belgium.

In February 2014, Onassis paid twelve million dollars for a 2.3-hectare (5.6-acre) estate and barn in Wellington, Florida. She sold the estate in April 2017 for $12.75 million.

In 2014, reports stated that Onassis has a fortune of less than $500 million dollars. In 2015, reports said she had 217 bank accounts, a fortune of $300 million dollars in cash, $350 million in stocks, and $150 million in gold bullion.

Hence, the golden heiress appears to be a millionaire rather than a billionaire.

After her divorce, Athina seemed to warm up to her mother’s home country, adopting her mother’s maiden name, learning the language, and even competing for Greece at a show jumping competition outside Athens in 2019.

Her life may be turning a corner if reports of a second wedding are true. Italian businessman and showjumper Alberto Zorzi has reportedly been dating Athina Onassis since 2017.
