At the D23 Expo, Disney released the first image from the live-action version of The Little Mermaid, starring Halle Bailey and directed by Rob Marshall.

Children’s reactions to the short video of Bailey singing “Part of Your World” have been captured by parents on camera. The TikTok trend shows Black girls watching the video and being shocked when they notice Bailey’s skin tone.

One girl said, “She’s brown like me.”

Social media users were moved by the responses, demonstrating the importance of representation. As a result of numerous fans tagging her, Bailey ended up retweeting one of the supercut reaction films that had circulated online.

Bailey tweeted, “People have been sending these reactions to me all weekend and I’m truly in awe, this means the world to me.”

Bailey on Being Chosen to Play Ariel

Bailey spoke about how amazing it was that she was chosen to play Ariel in a major motion picture.

She said, “Being a little girl swimming in the pool, imagining I was a mermaid, I never imagined that would come to life.”

The three days she spent filming “Part of Your World,” were, according to Bailey, the most beautiful experience of her life that allowed her to feel passion, discomfort, and just about every other feeling.

“It was so exciting for me to play those emotions, and to have Rob directing me and being such a moving force on this film was really an honor,” she said.

Based on the Disney animated film from 1989, Alan Menken added new songs to the live-action version of The Little Mermaid, with lyrics written by Lin-Manuel Miranda of Hamilton.

The first movie was written and directed by Clements and John Musker. It generated over 211 million dollars worldwide in revenue and won Academy Awards for Best Music, Original Song and Best Music, Original Score, as well as two Golden Globes, a Grammy, and other honors, according to Deadline.

The production of the live-action film, according to Deadline, began in 2016. The forthcoming musical fantasy, The Little Mermaid, will also include songs from the first movie, as well as brand-new songs written by Alan Menken.
