Guest Intelligence data from June suggest that hotels in popular Greek destinations, such as Mykonos and Santorini, outperform hotels in similar premium destinations of the Mediterranean, such as Ibiza, Sardinia, and Saint Tropez.

The latest results from ReviewPro’s Global Review Index (GRI), shared by the Institute of the Association of Greek Tourism Enterprises (INSETE), show that Greece is also in the lead as a country total with 87.9 percent on the average score, followed by Cyprus (86.1) and Croatia (84.9).

When it comes to individual destinations, Mykonos and Thessaloniki take the lead in respective competitor markets.

Mykonos and Cyclades best reviewed

The GRI is an online reputation index, based on data taken from all major online travel agencies and review sites. The performance is measured by eleven departments and attributes: Business, Cleanliness, Decoration, Entertainment, Food & Drink, Location, Reception, Room, Service, and Value.

In the June report, Greece claimed the top spot not only in relation to the average score but also in the service department in which it scored 91 percent, followed by Cyprus (90.6). Data of 2019 show that, prior to the pandemic, Greece was again outperforming competition with a year average of 87.1 percent on the GRI.

With regards to individual destinations, Mykonos recorded the highest review index (90.4 percent) against all destinations in June. It was followed by Santorini (89.9), St. Tropez (86.2), Sardinia (85.7), and Ibiza (84.1).

Overall, the Cyclades islands rank the highest among Greek and Mediterranean “sea and sun” destinations with 90.8 percent, followed by Halkidiki (89.8) and Crete and the Dodekanese (both 88 percent each).

In relation to the larger cities, Thessaloniki took the lead with 84.6 percent, followed by Athens, (84.0), Barcelona (82.3) and Istanbul (81.7), leaving Italian destinations Bologna (81.3) and Rome (79.9) far behind with Izmir (77) and Marseille (76.9).
