An outdoor “Summer Bed under the Stars” is now available for rent to star-gazing travelers on Airbnb in Crete. Gabriella Damianaki is the woman behind this unusual accommodation, which is located in Paleokastro, Heraklion.

The “room,” which is actually in a courtyard, is surrounded by the four walls of an old house.

The spacious—and airy—accommodations are just 100 meters (300 feet) away from the sea and 13 km (eight miles) away from Heraklion, the capital and main town of Crete.

The rental includes one queen-sized bed, a single bed, a toilet, a shower, two fireplaces, and a living room—but no ceiling.

Damianaki charges 38 euros per night ($40) for this unique place in the month of June.

She says that when she came for the first time to visit Crete, she immediately fell in love with the Mediterranean lifestyle. “I was impressed by people’s hospitality, the blue sea, and the mountains high to 2500 meters, with snow until June. And by the delicious food.”

She decided to move to Crete and renovate the family-owned guesthouse that her father built in the late 1970s. “I had no idea of how adventurous this story would become. Since then, I have been enjoying every day, starting with a cup of coffee and watching the sunrise at the beach,” the owner says.

What do guests of under the stars Airbnb say?

But what do the guests say? Liya who stayed in 2020 said that “sleeping outside might seem to be uncomfortable especially if there are mosquitoes…however, it was incredible! We slept so well and there was no problem with mosquitoes or anything else.”

“You have to be aware that you will sleep outside in an old taverna but the experience is unique and really enjoyable! What best than waking up with the sun and feeling the wind during your sleep!” says Etienne.

Michelle, who stayed at the accommodation in 2021, said that “Gabriella is very welcoming and friendly. Unfortunately, our bed was not the one in the picture since it had a little roof over it and no mosquito net… The location is very nice, directly at the beach with a beautiful sunrise view at the top of the hill.”
