The small community on the island of Karpathos, Greece has been in shock since the Tuesday suicide of a local man on whose son appeared in a sex video with another man.

The 60-year-old man took his own life after he had been continuously ridiculed for the sexual orientation of his 32-year-old son and his appearance in the video. He shot himself with a hunting rifle outside his house.

A friend told MEGA TV that the father was extremely upset by rumors he was hearing in the coffee shops. People were discussing the video and he was deeply embarrassed. He added that the video was shot two to three years ago but it suddenly surfaced and had been shared on the island.

“He realized that his son became the laughingstock of the village,” the friend said.

Police investigation on the sex tape

Police in Greece are investigating the case, trying to find out who was responsible for sharing the explicit video on social media.

There is growing speculation about their motives. Some islanders claim they aimed at blackmail, others that it was a case of “revenge porn.”

The perpetrators made certain that the video was seen by the father and his close circle of friends in Karpathos.

Suicide has shaken Karpathos, says mayor of Greece’s island

George Hatzikoutsos, the mayor of Karpathos, said that the suicide and what preceded it “have shaken the whole island.”

He complained, however, that some media are portraying the islanders as cannibals that devour their neighbors and friends.

“The issue of suicide has been presented by all media in the wrong way. Everything that has been written and heard is a reproduction of the news in the wrong direction, blaming an entire island,” Hatzikoutsos said speaking to Proto Thema.

“Our community is not cannibalistic targeting and devouring its members as reported…The father saw the video or heard the rumors about his son and it turned out that he did not have the power to handle the matter more rationally,” the mayor added.

He also pointed out that Karpathos “is abandoned by the central government”, as it lacks the means to cope with such tragic events. “We have no psychologists that can help treat the trauma caused by such incidents,” he added.
