The “Greek Philosopher” app gathers more than six hundred of the most profound words of wisdom from the major schools of ancient Greece and delivers them straight to you on your cell phone.

Based on original sources, this work is a compilation of carefully-selected quotes of ancient Greek philosophy spanning from the sixth century BC to the first century AD.

Thinkers from the Greek schools of Stoicism, Cynicism, and Epicureanism are among the thirty-six Greek philosophers featured on the app.

Ancient Greek philosophy

Stoicism is a school of Hellenistic philosophy founded by Zeno of Citium in Athens in the early third century BC. He was greatly inspired by the teachings of Socrates. Stoicism is a philosophy of ethics, with or without a belief in God.

According to its teachings, the path to Eudaimonia (i.e. happiness, fulfillment, flourishing) for humans is found in fully accepting the moment as it presents itself, by not allowing oneself to be controlled by the desire for pleasure or fear of pain, by using reason to understand the world, and by treating others fairly.

According to Cynicism, social values, material goods, and luxuries kept man away from true happiness, which can only be found by living in the simplicity of nature.

Epicureanism refers to a way of life that encourages its adherents to seek modest, sustainable pleasure in the form of a state of ataraxia (tranquility and freedom from fear) through knowledge of the workings of the world and limiting of their desires.

Ancient Greek philosopher app features quotes to live by

The quotes have the dual purpose of providing food for thought in today’s modern world and reminding the user of the invaluable contribution of ancient Greek philosophy to modern civilization.

When searching for an inspirational quote, one needs to look no further than the wisdom of the ancient Greek philosophers. The insights these men shared with the world resonate even in our modern times today and will live forever in our consciousness.

The following are some examples of the ancient wisdom to be found on the new app: “Many are knowledgeable, yet are lacking in wisdom,” from Democritus, fourth century BC.

“The cause of all sins lies in the person’s excessive selfishness,” from the wisdom of Plato, also from the fourth century BC. He is considered to be the most pivotal figure in the development of the Western tradition of philosophy.

Plato  summed up humankind’s eternal quest for knowledge in his saying: “Man is a being in search of meaning.”

On his own quest for knowledge of the universe and human nature, he came to the realization that “the worst of all deceptions is self-deception.”

The quote “All things were the same. Then, mind came along and set them in order,” is from the great thinker Anaxagoras, who lived in the fifth century BC.

And, last but not least, is the pithy quote from Pythagoras, who lived in ancient Greece during the sixth century BC: “Do not say a little in many words, but a great deal in few.”

Pythagoras’ philosophy influenced both Plato and Aristotle, and through them, his ideas were fundamental in Western philosophy.

In his life, 2,500 years ago, the Greek philosopher combined philosophy, mathematics, and religion, and his work and ideas are still influential to this day.

The Pythagorean theorem remains fundamental in mathematics and is taught in schools worldwide.
