Greece recorded a total of 7,805 cases of the coronavirus on Friday, while 7,317 were recorded in the country yesterday, Thursday.

The record for the highest number of coronavirus cases recorded in one day in Greece was broken last Tuesday, when 8,623 cases of Covid-19 were diagnosed.

In the past day, a total of 522,492 coronavirus tests have been administered, including both PCR and rapid tests, bringing the positivity rate in Greece to 1.49%.

The average age of those who have tested positive for the virus in Greece is 38, and the average age of those who have died with the virus is 78.

A total of 91 people with the virus passed away in the country just on Friday. This is 28 more than the 63 people who died with Covid-19 in Greece on Thursday.

Just 11 of Friday’s cases were identified during routine Covid-19 testing of tourists at the country’s borders.

Currently, there are 575 patients with the coronavirus on ventilators in Greece, which is 19 more than the 556 patients undergoing the invasive treatment in the country on Thursday.

Of the 7,805 new coronavirus cases recorded in Greece in the past 24 hours, 1,950 were located in Attica, home to the Greek capital city of Athens.

Unvaccinated barred from most indoor spaces in Greece

As Covid-19 cases surge, Greece is toughening restrictions for the unvaccinated starting on Monday, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced on Thursday.

In a televised address to the nation, Mitsotakis said that all enclosed venues will be off-bounds for unvaccinated citizens. He stressed once again that the new wave of the Covid-19 pandemic is the “pandemic of the unvaccinated.”

Unvaccinated citizens will be barred from all indoor venues, such as cinemas, theatres, and gyms. They will no longer be able to access indoor venues by presenting a negative Covid test result. At present, unvaccinated adults are only excluded from indoor eateries.

The premier also said that unvaccinated churchgoers should have a negative laboratory test, as the Synod of the Orthodox Church of Greece has already called for.

Greece has so far fully vaccinated about 62 percent of its population of around 11 million. Authorities had hoped for a rate of about 70 percent by Autumn.

Over 800,000 cases of Coronavirus recorded in Greece

Since the beginning of the pandemic, a total of 868,868 cases of Covid-19 have been recorded in the country, including all those who have recovered from the virus.

Of the 575 patients intubated currently, 84.3% are over the age of 70 or suffer from preexisting conditions. Their average age is 65.

The majority of those who are on ventilators in Greece, or 82.61%, are unvaccinated or partially vaccinated against the coronavirus.

Additionally, a total of 3,434 patients have been discharged from ICUs around the country since the beginning of the pandemic.

The 91 new deaths recorded on Friday bring the total number of coronavirus-related fatalities in the country to 17,168.
