The 2021 Primetime Emmy Awards took place Sunday night in Los Angeles. Ted Lasso, The Crown, and Mare of Easttown all walked away with multiple awards.

The awards ceremony, which is held annually, celebrated the most outstanding works of television in the past year during the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Last year’s Emmys, which took place six months after the first lockdowns of the pandemic began, was almost entirely remote. This year the nominees and their guests attended two live ceremonies, one in Los Angeles and the other in London.

Seth Rogen, the first presenter of the night, immediately made a deadpan joke critiquing the ceremony’s observance (or lack thereof) of COVID protocols:

“They said this was outdoors. It’s not. They lied to us. We’re in a hermetically sealed tent right now. I would not have come to this.”

The Emmy’s quickly shot back, saying that show took place in “a fully air-conditioned tent (that) will allow for more socially-distanced audience seating.”

This year’s ceremony was hosted by Cedric the Entertainer, and took place in the Live Event Deck adjacent to the Microsoft Theater, where the Emmy’s have been held since 2008.

The move was an attempt to better facilitate social distancing for the night, but Rogen seemed to find it inadequate. You can watch Rogen’s remarks in his presentation of the award for Supporting Actress in a Comedy:

Many much loved limited series and shows won big at the 73rd iteration of the awards. Rupaul made history when he won his 11th Emmy, becoming the most awarded person of color in the history of the ceremony.

Ted Lasso, Apple TV’s original series starring Jason Sudeikis, took home the awards for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series, Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series, Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, and Outstanding Comedy Series.

The Crown, Netflix’s long running original series chronicling the history of the British royal family in the 20th century, also swept the night.

The Crown won the awards for Outstanding Drama Series, Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series, Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series, Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series, Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series, and Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series.
