Greek tennis star Stefanos Tsitsipas reached a career high on Monday, when he officially ranked among the top three tennis players in the world, according to the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP).

Tsitsipas, 22, became the third best in his sport on Monday, overtaking Spanish great Rafael Nadal, who lost at a match in Washington, DC on Thursday.

Currently, Serbian player Novak Djokovic ranks first in the world, and Daniil Medvedev of Russia is second, according to the ATP rankings.

Reflecting on his new position among tennis greats, Tsitsipas stated to ATP Tour Tuesday that it is “a huge motivation and a very good indication that I’ve done great so far.”

Tsitsipas feels “blessed” for his ranking among top three

The Greek athlete noted that he is “blessed that I’ve put in so much work to make it to the top three, which is quite a special milestone.”

Tsitsipas broke into ATP’s top ten tennis players two years ago after a successful showing at the Dubai final, but his successes have not made the Greek tennis star comfortable.

Tsitsipas is committed to improving, however. “I wake up every single day with a goal — to get better. To get better with my tennis, to get better in the sport that I chose to follow in my life,” the tennis star said.

Athletes shine a light on Greek tennis

Greek tennis stars Maria Sakkari and Stefanos Tsitsipas advanced to the mixed doubles quarterfinals at the Tokyo Olympics after a win in a doubles match against the Canadian duo Gabriella Dabrowski and Felix Auger Aliassime.

It was an incredible win for the pair, by the score of 6-3 and 6-4, especially for Tsitsipas, who had just lost a singles match to Ugo Humbert of France earlier in the day.

However, the Greek duo were unable to match Australians John Peers and Ash Barty and did not advance to the semifinals.

Tennis has never enjoyed much popularity in Greece, which is why Tsitsipas has spoken numerous times of his goal to make tennis popular in Greece, which includes moving up in the ranks of the best players in the world.

He was the youngest men’s finalist at Roland Garros since Rafael Nadal won the title in 2008, and was trying to become the first Greek to win a Grand Slam title.

Maria Sakkari is the first Greek woman to appear in a semifinal of a Grand Slam.

The Greek tennis champion is known for her aggressive, all-court style of play, centered around her strong serve and powerful groundstrokes. Sakkari served the sixth most aces of any player in 2020, with 144 aces served in 31 matches.
